Networked robotic systems can be deployed for various applications such as cooperative exploration, search, rescue, information gathering, surveillance and  reconnaissance, monitoring and patrolling. In this talk, we will discuss one of three research directions of the large-scale networked robotic systems. First, we clarify some key concepts of networked robotic systems. Then, we will address how we model interaction and communication of robotic agents, then design the hierarchical decentralised control for mobile agents in large-scale networked robotic systems. Second, we will present how a homogeneous robotic network can be deployed to detect and gather environmental information while preserving the global network integrity through imaginary examples “darken the sky”. We will show how we employ this homogeneous robotic network to search for victim in the indoor environment. Third, we will introduce heterogeneous robotic networks through a bio-inspired concept, then present advantages of this approach in the indoor environment. Finally, we will show you the demonstration of our real heterogeneous robotic system.

Trung Dung Ngo got Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Robotics), the Aalborg University, M.Sc. degree in Computer Systems Engineering (Robotics) at the Maersk Institute, University of Southern Denmark, and B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Communication in the Vietnam National University. Ngo is currently with the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Ngo is the founder and scientific manager of the More-Than-One Robotics laboratory ( where he is supervising 5 PhD students. Before joining UBD, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University from 2008 to 2011 and a Research Associate for the FP6-European project in Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom. Ngo was awarded the Best Student paper of the 12th Int. Symp in Artificial Life and Robotics in Japan, 2007 and the Best Video Award of the IEEE Int. Conf. in Ubiquitous Robots and Ambient Intelligence in Korea, 2012, and the finalist of the best paper of the IEEE Int. Conf. in Ubiquitous Robots and Ambient Intelligence in Malaysia, 2014 (with Tung Le). His research works have been featured by the Newscientist magazine, and Danish and Bruneian media. He is author and co-author of over 50 international journal and conference papers, the editor of a research book in Biomimetric Technologies (2015). He is also editorial board of international journals, and editor for some special issues in robotics and intelligent systems. He was the founding and steering committee of the Centre for Excellence in Robotics, Aalborg University. He is an active member of IEEE, IEEE-RAS, EURON, and EUCOG.
